realme 8 Pro

realme officially launched its latest midrange smartphones the realme 8 and realme 8 Pro in the Philippines both boast ultra quad camera systems, and infinite bold design.

realme 8 Pro

The realme 8 Pro highlight is its 108-megapixel ultra quad camera with Samsung HM2 sensor. We had the realme 8 Pro weeks before the official launch courtesy of realme Philippines, now it's time to share my hands-on review.

You can read and watch our unboxing and first impression of the new realme 8 Pro here: link

Bold new Design
The realme 8 Pro boasts a new Infinite Bold Design with AG-Crystal Process, it comes in Infinite Black and Infinite Blue colors, the Infinite Black is mysterious and low-key while the Infinite Blue is dreamlike and dazzling.

There is this large "DARE TO LEAP" printed slogan at the back, realme called this design to show the company's unique comprehension of trendsetting design and the ability of display as well as the brand spirit of Dare to Leap.

The quad-camera comes in this large lens case with a very thick bump, good thing it comes with a free case that protects it from suffering scratches when this phone is placed on the table in its back. At the bottom part is the realme branding that also blends with the color of the back,

The back feels nice on hand with its glossy matte surface, it does not easily slip on hand and it does not get easily get smudges and dirt which is a good thing.

realme-8-pro

It's a slim device at only 8.1mm and it's also lightweight only 176g making it easy to use and does not strain the hand for long hours of use.

There's a 6.4-inch (16.3cm) Super AMOLED display with a punch hole at the upper left side where the 16-megapixel, f/2.5 wide-angle selfie camera is housed, it also features an in-display fingerprint scanner at the lower part of the screen for fast and convenient unlocking.

On the right side is the power button and the volume rocker, and on the left side is the SIM tray with two nano-SIM that supports a 4G connection and one microSD card slot for extra storage.

Going to the bottom is the usual Type-C port, audio jack, dual microphone, and speaker grille, there is another microphone at the top of the phone.

What's nice about having a new realme smartphone is they really DARE TO LEAP forward for every new release, they are one of the first smartphone companies to introduce exciting new designs and technology on every new product they released.

AMOLED Display
At the front and one of the main features of the realme 8 Pro is a 6.4-inch (16.3cm) Super AMOLED screen, with Full HD+ (1080 × 2400 pixel) resolution with 90.8% screen-to-body ratio and very minimal bezels.

realme-8-pro

It has a 180Hz Touch Sampling Rate what does this mean, it simply applies to how fast the vice can recognize the fingers on the screen with precise position detected in front of rapid or sliding movements. This makes the user experience a smoother transition and faster response when touching the screen.

realme-8-pro

It's also an advantage when playing games, the higher the frequency means the more precise of aim and move during gameplay, games such as Call of Duty Mobile can take advantage of a 180Hz touch sampling rate for more precise aiming for that perfect kill.

realme-8-pro

The display offers a lot of features that can be found in the Display and brightness settings menu. It can auto-switch between light and dark mode, and even the dark mode has its own settings. It will let you choose between Enhanced, Medium, and Gentle settings, and even the wallpaper and icons dark mode can be adjusted, thanks to realme IU 2.0 for adding this cool feature.

realme-8-pro

Since it's an AMOLED display, users can choose between Brilliant, Vivid, and Gentle color modes, personally, I prefer the Vivid mode which makes the colors more alive. It also supports an Always-on display where it displays the Date, Notification, and battery level when the screen is turned off.

Using the realme 8 Pro when watching videos is great the colors are close to accurate with a good brightness level and it can be used even outdoors in direct sunlight.

Snapdragon 720G Performance
In terms of internals, it's powered by Qualcomm SM7125 Snapdragon 720G chipset, Kryo 465, octa-core CPU with 64-bit architecture it's paired with Adreno 618 GPU and comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB UFS 2.1 storage, that is expandable via dedicated microSD card slot.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G octa-core mobile platform is also found on OPPO Reno5, realme 7 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy A52 so this makes this chipset popular among midrange smartphones.

realme 8 Pro performance on benchmark apps

AnTuTu: 288,757
GFXBench : 18fps (ES 3.1 onscreen)
Geekbench 5: 569 Single-core / 1719 Multi-core

Playing games on 8 Pro is great, shooting games such as Call of Duty Mobile played well with smooth performance on high graphics settings, the gameplay is amazing, and touch commands in precise thanks to its 180Hz touch sampling and its AMOLED display for immersive gaming.

If you are not familiar with the touch sampling rate, it can be defined as the number of times a touchscreen can sense input from your finger in a second. It's not the same as the screen refresh rate. So the higher the touch sampling rate the more responses the user gets, which gives a better gaming experience.

realme-8-pro

Other popular games we tested are Geshin Impact, PUBG, Free Fire, War Robots, and Asphalt 9, all run smoothly and the gameplay was great. We did encounter some frame-drop on Genshin Impact and War Robots during action games but nothing major to get disappointed. For casual games and multitasking, it will not be a problem with this device.

The speakers are surprisingly good and even at high volume it still has nice sound quality, but I still prefer using wired or wireless earphones for a better audio experience.

realme IU 2.0

Out of the box, the 8 Pro runs on the latest realme IU 2.0 based on Android 11. It offers a lot of improvements in terms of IU design and overall performance.

realme-8-pro

One of the cool features of realme UI is the Convenience tools in the settings, menu. It offers navigation customization, screen gestures, screenshot options., an assistive ball, smart slider, split-screen, and activation of Google Assitant on the power button.

realme-8-pro

It also now has a Personalizations menu, where users can customize the themes, wallpapers, and even the app icon style, the app layout and the fingerprint animation offer some cool choices. The notification drawer now can be customized, and the color scheme offers a lot of choices.

In terms of security besides the usual device security, it features Google Play Protect, Find my Device which is useful if you lost the phone, Payment Protection, Pseudo Block and Filter, Emergency SOS, and more.

The realme UI 2.0 looks more refined and eye candy, it offers a lot of customization to make it more personalized and unique.

Battery Performance
For battery power, the 8 Pro is equipped with a 4,500mAh battery, and 50W SuperDart Charge using the included 65W charger adapter.

realme-8-pro

On a single full charge, the battery lasted for a day of use which includes browsing social media pages, and blogs, streaming cat videos on YouTube, catching up on favorite Korean TV shows on Netflix, and playing a variety of games. Then it still has enough power to use for the next day, it's impressive compared to other brands that have a 5,000mAh battery capacity. Charging is also fast with its 50W SuperDart Charge support. It can charge the battery to 50% in just 17 minutes and it only takes 47 minutes to fully charge the battery.

What's more important is it has built-in Intelligent Five-core Chip protection for both the battery and the charger such as:

Adapter overload protection
Flash charge condition identification protection
Interface overload protection
Overcurrent-Protection and voltage overload protection
Battery fuse protection

108-megapixel Camera
The realme 8 Pro sports a 108-megapixel quad-camera system that incorporates Samsung's ISOCELL HM2, it also has an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with 119° field of view, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel B&W lens. Upfront on the punch-hole, there is a single 16-megapixel Sony IMX471 Sensor selfie camera.

realme-8-pro

What we can say is the 108-megapixel camera of the realme 8 Pro is truly amazing, that offers a lot of camera features, that normally you can find on flagship devices.
